When, from 13 August, an erika-purple steel platform lights up Dortmund harbour as part of the 2016 Ruhrtriennale, ZINQ® will have played a key role in this. This is not merely a colourful ornament – the platform, which is around 10 metres long, will be suspended from a crane in the workshop of the SAZ steel processing centre and can accommodate up to 15 people. Visitors to the art project "„well,come“", which is already making waves in the media will experience a sound and video installation within it. A project by the artist collective osa – office for subversive architecture, which explores the "flows" of this world: data flows, flows of goods and commodities, and flows of people.Anyone stepping onto the container-sized platform thus embarks on an audiovisual journey through the various facets of globalisation. ZINQ and Osterholt Stahlbau GmbH from Castrop-Rauxel brought the project to life at breakneck speed. There is a long-standing and trusting partnership between the DIN EN 1090-certified company Osterholt and ZINQ. Thanks to this excellent cooperation, the tight construction schedule was adhered to. Designed by the architects of the artist collective osa, the task was now to turn the artistic vision into reality within four weeks. "It was clear from the outset that our duplex process would be used here. First, we hot-dip galvanised the steel platform with duroZINQ® in our massive 17-metre kettle in Gelsenkirchen and then powder-coated it in erika violet RAL 4003 in Castrop-Rauxel," explains Volker Hastler, Head of ZINQ® Manufaktur, describing the work process. Although the steel platform will only be in use for six weeks as part of this year’s Ruhrtriennale, all those involved wanted high-quality corrosion protection for the eye-catching steel platform from the very start. Thanks to the corrosion protection provided by hot-dip galvanising followed by powder coating, it can now easily last for 100 years, even when used in other locations. Before that, however, cutting, welding and bolting were required – a task undertaken by the steel fabricator Osterholt. “This is a particular challenge for us too, because the result – unlike in most of our projects – is not a conventional functional component, but a work of art that is in the public eye,” explains Managing Director Thomas Osterholt. With its strong team, the steel construction company transformed the paper designs into a steel giant within a matter of weeks. A dazzling structure of truly immense proportions, as Volker Hastler also confirms: “Although I knew the dimensions, I was still surprised by the actual impact and monumentality, especially when you consider that this single component completely fills the width of Osterholt’s production hall.”From 13 August to 24 September, the sculpture will be on display in Dortmund harbour, taking visitors on a free journey through the world of currents.
