Project

A robust, low-maintenance staircase and viewing platform are to be built for visitors on St. Pietersberg (Maastricht/NL). The platform will be supported by two steel beams, each 0.5 metres wide and 21.5 metres long, with 2 metres of the length embedded in the concrete anchoring. The steel staircase will be 40 metres high and built alongside the rock face to make the limestone quarry more accessible for recreational users. The volume for galvanising for the client Visser Staal amounts to 50 tonnes.

Realisation

Various components were initially transported for finishing with duroZINQ to Alsdorf using the depotmobil collection and delivery service. Due to the boiler size at that location, the ZINQ site in Gelsenkirchen then processed particularly long steel parts, while those with very wide dimensions were transferred to Castrop-Rauxel via internal plant transfer. The ZINQ site in Antwerp also participated in the project, however, it was supplied with the corresponding components directly by the customer. Anchoring the staircase in the soft marl required a special stair construction – intermediate levels were installed, and to anchor these, holes had to be drilled into the marl and the galvanised steel beams embedded, which were finally secured with casting mortar.

All in all, a challenging project that was also rewarding: on 10 October, the staircase with viewing platform received the Benelux Trophy for Hot-Dip Galvanizing (BTTV) 2017 in the „Public Space“ category.
