Sustainability in construction requires reliable knowledge that is consolidated, practical, and accessible to all disciplines. This is precisely what the new „Compendium of Sustainable Buildings: Superstructures,“ published by Springer Vieweg, now available, achieves. 125 authors from 34 specialist groups have voluntarily contributed to it, pooling their expertise into a structured knowledge platform. ZINQ is also part of this extensive project: Dr. Thomas Pinger, Head of Research and Development at ZINQ Technologie GmbH, the innovation hub of the ZINQ Group, has co-authored a contribution on the topic of „Sustainability through Circular Economy“ with two other authors.

The compendium accompanies buildings throughout their entire lifecycle, from the initial project idea and realisation to subsequent operation and modernisation. In doing so, it links key topics such as CO₂ reduction, resource conservation, sufficiency, efficiency and resilience with practical solutions. It examines sustainable construction across six spheres of responsibility and is aimed at clients, planners, contractors, operators and students, among others. The contribution by Dr Thomas Pinger and his co-authors provides a particularly impressive illustration of the role that R strategies and well-conceived circular design play in sustainable construction.

„Every day, we see how well circular construction works when materials are durable and can be reused without pollutants,“ says Dr. Thomas Pinger. „Galvanised steel is a very good example of this: it protects structures for decades, remains fully circular, and enables real re-use solutions. It was important to me to incorporate this knowledge into the compendium – so that a reliable knowledge base emerges from many individual perspectives, which will move us all forward.“

A platform that continues to grow

The compendium is intended as a living document that is continuously updated. Further literature and best practice examples supplement the content and invite all interested parties to contribute their knowledge and develop it further together.

ZINQ supports this approach and contributes practical experience from the circular economy. This results in structures that conserve resources and whose components remain usable in the long term.

The compendium was initially released as an e-book and is available digitally as a complete work and in individual contributions.
